The design comes into play when the plastic is varnished. The varnish is a special concoction that is drawn to the magnetic field, making the design show up on the surface. A final layer of varnish gives the plastic resistance to damage and the design depth. The effect creates a look that is somewhat metallic and can be changed with colored varnish, particularly if there is a contrast with the color of the plastic. The technique is said to be affordable and will likely be popping up in the future.
