How to Manage Construction Disputes

Construction disputes cost money, time and manpower, but they are a necessary part of the industry. Disputes arise over worker claims, material shortages and problems with scheduling. Working through a claim is a time consuming process that pulls focus away from other work. That’s why many contractors will utilize private mediation, to settle claims quickly and amicably. Here are some tips to help you manage the next construction dispute that may arise in your line of work.

Determine the True Costs

Beginning with the project plans, detail every part of the project down to which brand names are used. Make sure that you note specifically what materials you want, and your budget to pay for those materials. The contractor may have ideas to help you meet that budget, or may have suggestions on alternate materials that will save costs without too many sacrifices.

Once everything has been budgeted for, follow up throughout the ordering process to make sure all materials are purchased as ordered. Dishonest contractors may try to short you in supplies, or try to sell you on some other vendor they like working with. Stay firm and keep note of every cost you incur. If there is a dispute that arises over costs, it’s easier to solve if both of you have good record keeping.

Final Thoughts

Construction claims management relies on good record keeping from both sides of the dispute. Once you’ve determined the cost of the project, consider other places where fault may potentially lay.
